And the winner is....

The winner of North and South New Zealander of the Year is .... Gareth Morgan.

It was a lovely event, held at the Boatshed on the Taranaki Wharf, beautiful weather, plenty of food and alcohol.

A few brief speeches and it was a pleasant way to spend ones evening.

For more on the winner purchase the January issue of North and South.

jesus christ North and South seems to be scraping the bottom of the barrel there.

Stef, is that because they chose Gareth Morgan or because they invited Welly Girl?

He rode a motorcyle down the Silk Road and he made a lot of money out of TradeMe. That makes him the NZer of the Year.

Am I missing something here?

gareth morgan. Last time I checked he was the guy who wrote stuff for the hearld and his son owns trade me. Of course my NZ popular culture references are nearly 4 years old now.

North and South kind of lost all credibility they had with Coddington's "Asian Invasion" story... ten years behind deadline. So, as likeable as Gareth Morgan is, why they named him NZer of the year escapes me.

Such short memories people!

As well as his brilliant work for UNICEF he also donated the small sum of $47 million to charity in April this year.

And he's a bloody nice guy, as I am sure Welly Girl will elaborate upon soon!

Yes, Gareth Morgan is a lovely man, his son Sam sold trade me for $700 million to Fairfax earlier this year.

Gareth received a large sum of money from this transaction (although not nearly as much as Sam) and donated it all to charity.

I could write a whole article on him, but wait that's already been done in the Jan North and South.

Or you could google him - plenty of info there.

Ed - you can try and attack me, but everyone knows that that is just jealousy. Especially as it also means I get to attend FHM and Ralph parties :-( boo hoo for you

I can assure you I'd much rather go to a Quadrant dinner than attend a party held by a sleazy men's magazine.

Or North and South.

FHM and Ralph... ahhh politically incorrect mens mags at their very finest! :)

The Sydney editions of those magazines are nowhere as good as the original UK ones, but still pretty good :)
