This is why I laugh when people blather on about how sad it is that we've lost our spirituality in the West, or how tribal societies are more natural or closer to nature. Spiritual, natural and closer to nature = blaming witches for disease and killing them, instead of finding out what actually causes disease. Glad to have left it behind.
It's a problem in Africa too. "My Traitors Heart" by Rian Malan touches on this.
It's exacarbated buy the stress caused by colonisation - pre-colonial socities may not have been perfect, but they'd usually achieved some kind of equilibrium (or in the case of Rapa Nui, failed to do so and suffered drastic effects).
